Greetings Jamaul, At this time the current hiring process does not give extra points for existing certifications. The benefit would be in the academy where one would not have to sit for the final EMT exam if they already had their NREMT certification. The same goes for someone who is an existing Texas certified Firefighter.
As far as extra points go, militay veterans receive extra points. Also keep in mind that if there is not a contract in place then the process does not give extra points at all for any reason.
Having certifications and other positive items in your resume could very well help out in the oral interviewing session.
I've heard the amount of applicants applying to be FF's is up there and it would help if I was certified.
Is this true?
If so, what type of certifications matter the most and give me the greatest odds?
I have other things that are helpful to my resume as well, but I know something FF related would help.
Thanks,
Jamaul F.
